NOVATEK Launches Northernmost GHG Monitoring Station in National Carbon Supersites Network

Moscow, 18 September 2026. PAO NOVATEK (“NOVATEK” and/or the “Company”) in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Arctic Research Center, and the University of Tyumen has launched the northernmost greenhouse gas monitoring station in the national carbon measurement supersites network. The facility is located within a license area operated by one of the Company’s subsidiaries, NOVATEK-Yurkharovneftegas, in the Nadym District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.

Situated in the southern tundra, the new station will complement the Seven Larches carbon supersite in the region’s forest tundra, helping to improve the accuracy of the climate change forecasts for the Arctic.

The facility’s core feature is its focus on permafrost. Equipped with modern world-class measurement tools and a temperature measurement well, the station will support the assessment of the tundra ecosystems’ carbon sink potential.

“For NOVATEK, understanding the magnitude and evolution of climate change in the Arctic, where we have our resource base, is strategically important,” says Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of NOVATEK’s Management Board. “Expanding the network of carbon measurement supersites and conducting climate research will provide a more robust foundation for the design and engineering solutions that we apply.” 

The project is a perfect illustration of efficient cooperation between the scientific community, business, and government in pursuance of climate studies and sustainable development of the Arctic.
